குரங்கு பொம்மை

A local goon trying to wear a gangster’s hat, an old man with loyal submissions and a caring family, a devil in the shape of a man. If the ensemble cast is stitched with these characters, what do you expect? Perhaps, a tepid, outclassed flick. Oops! You will be surprised. It turns out to be a little stunner.

Such scripts have few takers, especially in desperate days when everyone is donning the ‘niche’ title to create the ‘most wanted’ magic on screen. But the ones who eventually make it out of the archives are the ones that keeps our cinema alive. Yes, honestly. Yes, truly. If you ask me, Superstars don’t make Cinema. They bestowed upon for a curiously different reason. Films like ‘Kurangu Bommai’ make the cut to retrieve cinema from the clutches of foregone parody.

Goon is a gangster but human. The devil who looks like man is the real animal of this film. It’s really the deluge of human needs and the gory extent he ranters himself to meet his desires is the real torment of this mini thriller.

The cast. All of them were affable and superb. Stuck to their lines and impeccable expressions from the lead actors (there are actually 3 of them) are believable and insane. I loved watching ‘Bharathiraja’ on screen, as an actor. I was always sure about the actor in him, many years back. This time, he is the nemesis and the protagonist, in a disjointed way.

Tamil cinema, I love you for such films of pure tenacity and dodged thrills.

Trivia: குரங்கு பொம்மை in English is ‘Monkey Doll’.

The Lonely Sabotage – Continues to Conclude

The cops got in to an investigation after taking the bodies in to custody. The post mortem reports were no surprises but for the girl’s. The couple were identified as the girl’s parents, who were brutally murdered along with the girl, their throats slit with a kitchen knife. There were blood stains all over there bodies and presumably assaulted before being killed.

But as it appears, the girl was murdered days before she was actually killed.

The girl’s parent’s maternal home is a small town, around 200 miles away from their place. Both families are quite close to each other. In fact, the maternal house has no girl child and the girl was the apple of their eyes. They often visited each other during festivals and shared their happiness of being together.

Who would have guessed that a family so affectionate to each other would have hidden desires of dark ferments?

As the cops dug deeper, and a more provocative questioning, the girl’s aunt confessed the diabolic intentions. Her husband, and the girl’s uncle has been absconding since 2 weeks. He used to call her but since last 2 weeks, she lost touch with him. They both have a teenage son who is a college drop out and owns a small cyber cafe along with a xerox machine in their town, few meters away from where they live. Her husband owns a small retail shop of groceries and fruits in the main market of the town.

But since last 6 months, his husband has turned in to an upsurge monster. Or, may be something even more uglier and tormenting. His unusual late working hours and sudden inflow of perpetual cash made his wife blink an eye, more than once. After few days of relentless questioning and trash talk, he reveals his involvement in drug trafficking business through the local goons of the town. Worse, some part of it also involves human trafficking. Needless to say, his wife was throttled to death with this news but stood helpless as the maniac threatened to kill her and their son if she had other ideas.

Since both families were close to each and the equation of her uncle being an enigma, spelt doom on the girl and her family. And the girl’s uncle had a devious mind. The girl became a bait for his unscrupulous deeds.

He began to sexually abuse the girl when he visited them, and at times when the girl’s parents were out since they were oblivious of this devil at home. He even took the girl to his place on the pretext of getting her a bicycle to commute, drugged and raped her. This continued for a while and on one such occasion, the aunt was a direct witness to his lust and crime. Yet, she was too meek to speak out. He even used this girl to carry few packets of substance to the neighbourhood in the pretext of getting her a job in a top company.

Few weeks back, a deal of his went berserk and the local cops were out for the hunt. He went out without notice, called her wife to ask if the cops came home. But his lust for the girl was beyond his desire to escape the inevitable.

The day before all 3 were killed, he went to the girl’s house. Drunk beyond measures, he captures her before intoxicating her parents and tying them up in a corner. He drugs her to keep her calm and rapes her. He leaves, dazed and dashed once his filthy desires vanquished his lust. He kills her parents, while on his way out.

Post mortem reports revealed that the girl died from drug overdose.

DNA test from semen traces proved that it was him.

The Uncle. The Husband. The Man. The Animal.

He is still absconding. The hunt is on and the case remains open.

Demo-Crazy

Theatre. Drama. Roots. Hiatus.

A political satire, hosted by Mylapore Fine Arts. An ovation and three cheers for the interesting attempt.

when they thought otherwise

No, I haven’t watched ‘The Revenant’ yet. But, sincerely, there were moments of severe brilliance for Leonardo DiCaprio when he could have.

I take this jab at him now, rather on the ones who said ‘no’ to him. I list down DiCaprio’s earlier performances that didn’t go down the red carpet way.

Django Unchained
As Calvin Candie, this was DiCaprio’s most accomplished performance. To tap it off, it was one of the most frightening and voracious acts I have seen in an American film. As the catalyst and the de noir of the script, he made us look breathless. More significantly, this was one of his best outside the Scorsese camp and his first with Tarantino.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Jordan Belfort isn’t a hero but was a mercurial genius with insatiable orgasm and in-gullible intent. DiCaprio was ‘Jordan’ personified and delivered a kick ass performance as the eccentric stock broker. Not Scorsese’s best but once again proved why he is the numero uno of wetted biopics.

J Edgar
Though this film is ridden with make up shambles, it was a tough film to make and an equally difficult character to play. As one of the most influential and controversial figures in American history, DiCaprio’s was a gutsy performance. Client Eastwood’s more capable film in the recent past, it was flawed but bold and invigorating.

Body of Lies
Not hugely celebrated due to the disturbing and coaxial content, but one of my better picks in DiCaprio’s career. Stylishly made with rude facts, DiCaprio as agent Roger Ferris was hugely courageous and equally vulnerable to the prevailing mayhem, his was a convincing act of valour in this less talked about Ridley Scott film.

Gangs of New York
Very early in his career but this Scorsese drama was the beginning for DiCaprio to take the plunge in to the big league. Though pitted with a very talented Daniel Day Lewis, he manages to fort well with some sizzling chemistry with Cameron Diaz. It also kicked off his illustrious collaboration with the legendary Scorsese.

Chennai – Mayhem to Life

the city of indian sunshine, the glory of south indian peninsula,
quite always the doyen of heat and coffee, temples and bay of divine cuisine.
ambushed by nature, swallowed by waters, mangled with chaos.
chennai, the city of belligerent mother. today.

raven by marauding clouds, broken hearts and thousand more.
galloping horse sedated by the titanic verse, vetted by chapters unlike past.
when monsoon never arrives, oh boy! sure it did this time.
whose vengeance? ask mother gods to their bosses of imperious poise,
holy cow, cows and sheep afloat amidst human jab of path breaking menace.

survival, ah, the call of the hour and wait for thousands.
desperate measures and teething myriads of city living under shades of mercurial salt,
forged missions and buckets of help from a nation that comes together to live.
unrivalled, un-hatched, un-helmed – still pouring as I invite solace to calm madness.

not victim or witness, a son who is just elated to find his own in the lap of safety,
while weeps for the ones who have none to lend a thought about.
at a time of clad moments when time and machine have given away to human arms,
when money and technology were swept away through to shelter and survival.
yes, the days when sanity took over. for a change, we wept. we must.

lets forget the intolerance gig, time to embrace the inevitable quit and slit the git,
lets do it once, for us and only for us. not for the humdingers of political cats.
yes, yes, we are doing it. truly, we are at it. all ruins yes, hope is the victor and disparage collides.
chennai – yes, you are rising and am at the top, with you, surging away.
